left of centre

{Volume I, Issue I}

the {warehouse} magazine is a voice. It is an avenue for expression. It is a social conscience. Reminiscent of the counterculture movements of the turbulent sixties or the beat poets who inspired a generation, our soul is rooted in a dedication to social activism and cultural awareness.

The inaugural issue is meaningfully entitled left of centre. While everything in life is political, our interpretation of this idiom goes far beyond the realm of the National Assembly. It is an expression of our commitment to an alternative path, be it political, social, cultural or, perhaps especially, other.

Taking this approach as our lens, a momentary glance at the undercurrents shaping our global landscapes unearths a disconcerting portrait. In an effort to bring relevance to the issues of our day, we strive to provoke the reader to think beyond the mainstream envelope and, in so doing, dare them to confront the brand of social and political apathy that suffocates the human imagination.

The very same lens unveils a humanity that is as brilliant and vivacious as it is problematic. the warehouse is also about the lighter side of lifestyle. It will guide the reader through the roads less traveled and along the boulevards of alternative artistic expression. It will encourage the reader to taste the wine of the bon vivant and delight in its vibrant flavour, as even fine cuisine can be prepared with a curious political spice. If we are to bring a sense of balance to the universe, we must begin by bringing balance to our lifestyle.

We were once challenged to imagine a more compassionate and equitable world – to hold a mirror to reality and question the reflection it cast. This challenge is as important today as it was when it was originally spoken, perhaps more so.

The title of the issue is more than a reflection of the alternative. It is, in a sense, our manifesto.

…our imagination discovers its voice. {w}
