life on a dime

life on a dime {Volume I, Issue VI}

the {warehouse} magazine is a voice. It is an avenue for expression. It is a social conscience. Reminiscent of the counterculture movements of the turbulent sixties or the beat poets who inspired a generation, our soul is rooted in a dedication to social activism and cultural awareness.

life on a dime is a reminder. Life is precious.

Our fifth edition in our journey to 2010 encourages readers to take things in stride, while at the same time imploring them to be more serious about critical subjects like the treatment of Aboriginal women and nuclear disarmament. In many ways, life on a dime speaks to the trite maxim, chose your battles.

A recent read out {loud} submission from a Palestinian journalist living in the Gaza Strip puts this notion into perspective. To paraphrase, he wrote ‘sometimes ‘living on a dime’ is just an expression we use. For some, it refers to cutting back on expenses or maybe even dipping into a savings or credit account to make ends meet. But for some people, in some places, this expression literally is a style of living’.

And while this passage likely echoes the voices of many inhabitants across our global community, it serves as a {not so} subtle reminder not to take life, in its plentiful expressions, for granted.

To borrow from the words of Danny Kaye: life is a great big canvas, and you should throw all the paint on it you can. {w}
