Green Homes and Sustainable Living

In looking at ways to apply the principles of sustainable living into our everyday choices, I could have discussed living in clay houses off the coast of a tropical island. But I don’t think that would have given us something to put into action today. It all starts at home...a green home.

Rather than worrying about driving the newest, hippest, greenest vehicle on the market, make your home (renter or owner) the most energy efficient human habitat possible. Who cares what kind of car you drive? Drive Less.

Our homes create at least twice as much greenhouse gas emissions than the cars we drive.

Compact cars? Why not compact homes? A big house seems great but, environmentally speaking, small is beautiful. A compact home consumes less materials and energy during its initial construction and less energy consumption for the expanse of its life. And if that’s not enough, consider this: there is less room for accumulating things that waste energy, electricity, savings or whatever. Ideally your compact home will be close to your work, close to schools, public transport, parks.

The environmental impact of our home is determined by four indicators: {1} water consumption, {2} energy efficiency, {3} air quality and the reduction of greenhouse gases, and finally {4} a sustainable living environment of reuse and recycle. To get some helpful tips on your energy consumption, these websites offer home analysis tools, solutions and information on grants and incentives for eco-friendly renovating.

Every saving you make in home energy consumption is multiplied by three for its overall impact on the environment; so yes, every little bit helps make a difference. It all starts at home, a green home. {w}
