economic downturn

what effect has the 2009 economic downturn had on developed countries' financial promises to developing ones? i think that now, more than ever, the promises made in those millennium development goals will be put to the test and it will be no surprise if world leaders crap out on their promises, using the economic slowdown as an excuse.
investment, not charity

By Mike Ryder - You raise a very valid point in addressing the question of corruption. That's why Sachs underlines that any development plan would require total visibility over how the funds are distributed and spent as a condition - like any investment, rather than charity.

no single solution

By Brian Guerry - Throwing money at the problem or focusing on a "magic" answer is not the solution. There is no single solution to the problem of poverty or extreme poverty. I agree with Sachs' vision of a community-based approach that cohesively helps to lift a community out of poverty by providing basic services and harvesting sustainable and regular employment opportunities as well as access to food, basic goods and markets.

By Adam Panetta - You're right that corruption is a huge obstacle, but it's also used an appeasement device for rich peoples' consciences (in the form of "there's no point in donating or committing more aid as those corrupt governments will just snatch up all the money"). I do like Sachs' community approach though. We're not talking people who live on meager salaries and get by all right here. Extreme poverty means no health, job, food or shelter security whatsoever. The priority needs to be satisfying these communities' basic needs and giving them the boost they need to be securely self sufficient, providing them with basic infrastructure and access to markets. Once those basic needs and stability are met, political activism and social progress ought to inevitably follow.
