Clashes of Fire: a review of The Bite of the Mango

Clashes of Fire: a review of The Bite of the Mango

The Bite of the Mango. I found the title interesting. It rolled off my tongue like something sweet, something musical. Like a treat I wanted to devour. Something intriguing really, considering the horrific nature of the subject it abborded. I had heard of Mariatu Kamara’s story before when a friend of mine first heralded it as one of her very favorites. In fact, I had read books like it before and found them difficult to take in at once. Ishmael Beah’s own account of his involvement as a child soldier in Sierra Leone is one such example that came to mind. Something had drawn me to his story too, but whatever it was, was much different than what had brought me to Mariatu’s. Perhaps it was because I knew what to expect from the story of a child soldier; still had those powerful stereotypical images of red-eyed children holding guns in my mind.  And when, having finished the book, the thought of it still trailed me like a cherished memory, I found out just what a tremendous impact this young girl had made in the international community.

The G20 Summit 2010

The G20 Summit - Love & Confrontation

The G20 Summit RiotsAbout 10.000 protesters took on the street of Toronto on the opening day of G20. After 2 hours of peaceful march, about 100 violent black-blocs anarchists left the march and started smashing windows and police cars. After about a hour and a half, police began trapping protesters in Queen's Park, as the anarchists changed clothes and vanished, leaving peaceful protesters against police charge and pepper sprays bullets.
